The book critically examines its ambiguous legal status, societal stigma, and exploitative nature. Originating as a doctoral thesis, it evolved into an in-depth study analyzing historical, social, and legal influences. It compares global models, such as the Scandinavian and German approaches, to assess their relevance for India. Through case law, legislative discussions, and empirical research, it highlights policy gaps and proposes a draft bill aimed at eliminating commercial sex work while providing economic alternatives and social support. The book advocates for structural changes to promote gender equality and dignity while urging policymakers, researchers, and activists to rethink existing legal frameworks. It serves as a call to action for a more just and humane approach to addressing the complexities of sex work in India.
